There’s a version of visibility that costs too much.
It’s the kind where you raise your hand for everything because you know that being invisible is worse. Where you say yes to speaking opportunities, to committee seats, to being the representative — because if you don’t, someone else will, and the conversation won’t include people like you. Where you work twice as hard to be perceived as half as capable, and you’ve been doing it so long that you can’t tell anymore where the strategy ends and the exhaustion begins.
For gay and queer men of color in professional spaces, visibility is rarely neutral. It comes with a tax. And that tax — the emotional labor of being seen while also managing how you’re seen — is real, cumulative, and rarely talked about in leadership development spaces.
May’s Empower Hour is built around that exact tension.
About This Session
Empower Hour is a free, monthly virtual gathering for gay and queer men of color. One hour. Real conversation. No performance required.
This month’s theme: Visibility Without Burnout.
We’ll get honest about what sustainable visibility actually looks like — how to build presence in your field and your workplace without handing over your nervous system in exchange. We’ll talk about where the line is between strategic visibility and self-erasure, and what it takes to stay seen without staying depleted.
What We’ll Explore
- Why visibility feels riskier for gay and queer men of color — and how that shapes our choices
- The difference between strategic visibility and compulsive visibility
- How burnout masks itself as ambition, and what to watch for
- Building a visibility practice that’s sustainable, not sacrificial
Who This Is For
Gay and queer men of color who are trying to build a name, a reputation, or a career — and who are starting to feel the weight of what that visibility is costing them. Also for those who’ve been hiding and are ready to think about what stepping forward might look like on their own terms.
